The Students’ Command of the Economic Fighters League has noted in the media yet another discriminatory, unethical, and alien directive by the Director of Legal Education at The General Legal Council (GLC), Mr. Yaw D. Oppong. It is our understanding that the GLC is ordering all qualified students of law to submit their social media handles for their virtual activities to be monitored in terms of conduct.

This action by GLC is a naked abuse of delegated discretions of the Legal Professions act and must be condemned. It is alien to the Legal Profession’s act – the unethical profiling of students in the name of the virtual monitoring of good conduct is an absolute breach of academic freedom, the right to freedom of expression, and freedom of speech and must not be entertained by the students or the public.

A few weeks ago, we noted and condemned on the record, similar display of arrogance by the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for backing the tyrannical directive of the GLC intended to coerce or force prospective students of law to sign an undertaking barring them from calling for the remarking of their entrance examination scripts for the Ghana School of Law.

The above, along with the ongoing persecution of law student Elorm Ababio aka ‘Ama Governor’, reveal a concerning trajectory in which the GLC and the GBA seek to oppress and silence the future lawmakers of our country. This can not be allowed to pass unchecked.

The Students’ Command of the Economic Fighters League calls upon the general students and professionals of law to stand their ground. Do not be compelled to participate in yet another unlawful act, by allowing your right to freedom of expression and of speech to be taken away from you.
