The Students Command of the Economic Fighters league with heavy heart has monitored the news making rounds in the media space about some over six thousand (6000) students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology being forced to defer their studies due to their inability to effect payment of academic user fees to the management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Sections within the same media space paint a misleading bad and unethical reportage, making a mockery of such a serious situation by dangerously reducing the actual reasons of the students inability to pay academic user fee to betting, and such a gross display insensitivity by such media houses is condemned.
It must be stated on the record, the right to free education is supposed to be protected and made enforceable by the supreme laws of Ghana, which also means quality education from basic schools to tertiary level is supposed to be free, available and accessible to all Ghanaians. Sadly however, imposed fees have become condition precedent for one to be able to access their right to tertiary education.
The prevailing poor economic indices of Ghana, partly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and largely due to decades of bad governance coupled with mass job losses during the so-called banking sector clean up by the governing administrators of the state’s economy, high unemployment and a low minimum wage of 13.50 cedis are enough reasons to scrap school fees for all tertiary students in the short-term, whilst looking at how to generally suspend payment of school fees across various levels of education to allow the full realization of the right to free available, accessible and quality education from basic level to tertiary level.
The Students’ Command of the Economic Fighters League understands the basic right of students must at all time be protected and thus an organized student front can better lead the enforcement of their basic right to free quality education as well as demanding decent wages and salaries worthy of the teaching professions for their Teachers/Lecturers.
The Students’ Command is calling on ALL tertiary students to join the #GhTertiaryFeesMustFall rally, which is in consonance with the enforcement of the right to free available and accessible quality tertiary education to all students. Calling for tertiary fees to be scrapped and succeeding doing same will bring a lasting remedy to violations of the right to equal educational opportunities.
We want to take this opportunity to call on students and other well wishers to join a planned peaceful walk in solidarity with all victims of “pay before education”. Call or Contact us via WhatsApp: 0248991960, or join the Telegram group #GhTertiaryFeesMustFall: https://t.me/+G-xDfOpLXqhlODdk
